More about the provenance Mahal | Iran
Mahal is located in West Iran, belongs to the carpet region of Arak. Mahal rugs are woven in the stile of Farahan rugs (also called Feraghan). Due to their high quality of wool they are considered to be very reliable and longlasting.
This Oriental rug has been treated with an "Antique Finish" wash. This wash includes not only the actual cleaning of the carpet but also its processing (ennobling) which represents an increase in the carpet's value. Carpet lovers often appreciate the "patina", the antique look which is reached by ageing, usage, and light exposure. Therefore this wash has been developed which actually accelerates this procedure and turns the colors of a rug, which often still feel and look "raw" after the carpet production, into softer and older looking colors. By this special technique a soft and silky feel is added to the Oriental carpet as well. This washing technique requires experience and skill since otherwise carpets could easily be damaged by it. In this case the washing was implemented perfectly.
This Mahal has a "Herati" or "Mahi" design (has its origin in Herat, ca. 16th century, short for "Mahi to Hos" meaning "fish in the pond"). A rosette is surrounded by a rhombus which is again surrounded by four bent leaves. The name "Mahi" meaning "fish" was given to this design because the leaves resemble swimming fish.
