Tabriz is the capital city of the province of Azerbaijan in North-West Iran. The city was founded by the Harun al-Rashid approx. in the year 800. Since the 17th century Tabriz is probably the most significant carpet-production-center of Iran. The finer Tabriz production is considered the best Persian productions in terms of quality and design. In order to determine the fineness of a Tabriz, the term "raj" is being used which means "row of knots". The number of knots or "raj" is counted within the range of 2,76 inch (7 cm) which again is the unit of one "Gereh". "Tabriz 50 raj" therefore means, that within 2,76 inch (7 cm) there are 50 knots. This rug therefore has an average fineness of 300 knots/inch˛ (ca. 465,000 knots/m˛).
This Oriental rug has been treated with a "Noble Finish" wash. This wash includes not only the actual cleaning of the carpet but also its processing (ennobling) which represents an increase in the Oriental carpet's value. By this special technique a soft and silky feel and shine are added to the carpet. This washing technique requires experience and skill since otherwise carpets could easily be damaged by it. In this case the washing was implemented perfectly.
This Oriental rug has 1 abrash. The word "abrash" comes from the Persian word for cloud "abr". It is the expression for unwanted color differences in rugs. Mostly they are caused by not having dyed enough wool for the rug so that further wool has to be dyed and creating exactly the same tone of color is nearly impossible, especially with vegetable dyes. Mostly this happens with tribal/nomadic carpets. When washed these differently dyed wools react differently and the initial hardly visible difference in color increases and becomes an abrashe. Some religious people create such color differences in Oriental rugs on purpose in order to grant Allah the exclusive role to create perfect things. In newer productions abrashes are often made in order to give the rug a more authentic antique look.
